We spend the majority of our lives building our careers.
Culturally, it’s easy to let them become our identity.
As kids, we’re taught to think about what we want to be when we grow up.
As adults, one of the first things we ask each other is what we do.
When we moved back to the U.S. from Europe in our thirties, we’d left our jobs and hadn’t started the next ones yet.
We went to a party with old friends.
Everyone wanted to know what we did.
Of course we knew the answer.
We just thought it was the wrong question.
After a decade in Europe, it was surprising how quickly work became the indicator for who we were.
Life has taught me something different since then.
People get laid off. Companies fail. We get sick.
Priorities change. Opportunities appear that we never expected.
Life is anything but linear.
Careers are becoming less linear too.
Now AI is changing jobs, skills, and how we work faster than most of us have experienced before.
Adaptability matters.
But adaptability isn’t just about keeping our skills current or learning the latest AI tool.
It’s the ability to keep creating value when the conditions around us change.
That requires agency.
Sometimes we change roles. Sometimes the work changes around us. Either way, we have to keep figuring out where our experience creates value without letting every career change rewrite who we are.
Our careers matter. We work hard to build them.
Choosing how much they define us is different.
That feels worth thinking about this Labor Day.
Execution Beats Theory. Every Time.
