Everyone is producing more content about AI.
Most of us aren’t trusting it anymore.
Walked down Fillmore, Hayes, and Valencia streets this week and heard the same three conversations about AI before I finished my coffee each time.
Model rollouts. Agent building. Layoffs.
Not what AI does. How it's being built. Which models. What breaks at scale. Who just lost their job to one.
San Francisco is where the specifics get worked out. The details that will make it into a product six months from now are being debated over coffee right now, blocks from my house.
That matters for what comes next.
Stanford's 2026 AI Index says organizational adoption hit 88%. Generative AI reached 53% of the population in three years, faster than the PC and faster than the internet.
But Edelman's 2026 Trust Barometer, 33,938 respondents across 28 countries, shows the other half of the story. 70% of people are unwilling or hesitant to trust someone with different values, facts, or problem-solving approaches. Trust in business sits at 64. The income-based trust gap in the U.S. has doubled since 2012.
This is causal data, not correlation. Research that explains why, not just that.
Buyers are trusting less. Builders are producing more. The two curves are moving in opposite directions.
The teams winning in 2026 are not the heaviest AI users. They kept their credibility signal intact while competitors turned into content firehoses.
Brand is your trust index.
Stripe's documentation is the clearest example I know. Every developer who reads it finds out the claims are true. That is the moat. It compounds every time a promise holds.
It is the thing AI cannot replicate and competitors cannot buy. It is the sum of every specific claim you made that turned out to be true.
Naming the problem first is how you arrive first. Understanding why the problem exists is how you stay ahead. Both matter more than ever.
Protect it like the moat it is.
