We’re most vulnerable when success convinces us we’ve figured it out.
Olympic athletes know this better than most of us.
A record can stand for years. Then someone arrives faster, stronger, better prepared, or simply better on that day.
Skill matters.
So do discipline, timing, recovery, conditions, coaching, and the willingness to keep questioning what already works.
Companies aren’t that different.
The moment we start believing one advantage makes us untouchable, we stop looking at where we’re exposed.
That’s where humility becomes strategic.
Not humility as modesty.
Humility as the willingness to keep asking:
What are we missing?
I’ve been using 4S to think about that question.
State. Scale. System. Signal.
A robotics company may win because years of operational data make every deployment smarter.
A medtech company may become harder to replace because switching means retraining clinicians and recertifying workflows.
An industrial company may own the language its market uses to define the problem.
An AI company may have enormous Scale and still be vulnerable somewhere else.
The advantage changes with the stage and the market.
Success tells us what worked.
It doesn’t tell us what will keep working.
That’s the point of 4S.
Not to tell us how strong we are.
To show us where we’re exposed.
Execution Beats Theory. Every Time.
