Who Bears the Consequences of AI Decisions?

Everybody wants to change the world.

Nobody gets a free pass on the consequences.

I'm all for pushing the limits of what's possible.

But the real test isn't the jump. It's the bounce.

The people deciding which risks are acceptable aren't necessarily the people who will bear them.

It's the part of AI's future we aren't talking about enough.

I get it. You want to tell me all about your AI agent.

Great. I'm building them too.

Last week, Sam Altman told POLITICO that the world should accept some harm from AI in exchange for its benefits and broader access.

I agree that innovation involves risk. I fundamentally disagree that society should bear the consequences without clear accountability.

You can't ask the world to depend on your technology, capture the financial upside, and expect everyone else to accept the downside.

Last year, a Replit AI agent deleted a customer's production database. Replit acknowledged the failure, restored the data, and added safeguards.

But imagine you’re that customer.

Drug companies must test their products, disclose known risks, and answer for failures. AI companies should face meaningful obligations too.

We're giving agents access to our systems, customer data, financial decisions, and business operations.

That's not just a technology decision.

It's an economic and legal one.

The companies building AI decide which risks to take.

We shouldn't be left paying when the controls fail.

If AI is becoming essential infrastructure, responsibility has to extend beyond safety policies and promises.

No one is asking anyone to slow down innovation.
